As we head into the Rochester winter, many families think photography season is over. They picture gray skies, slushy roads, and freezing temperatures. They think, “We’ll just wait until spring.”
But as an artist, I believe winter is actually one of the most beautiful times to document your family—by bringing the focus inward.
In-Home Lifestyle Sessions are my favorite way to capture connection. There is no wind, no stress about coats, and best of all, you are in your safest, most comfortable space.
The “Messy” is Beautiful
The most common objection I hear is: “But my house isn’t Pinterest-perfect. It’s messy.”
Let me tell you a secret: Perfection is boring.
When I photograph families in Pittsford, Victor, or the city, I am not photographing your baseboards or your unwashed dishes. I am photographing the way the light hits your kitchen table where you eat breakfast every day. I am photographing the nursery you spent months planning.
Your home is part of your story. Ten years from now, you won’t care if the throw pillows were straight. You will care that you have a photo of your son sitting in his favorite corner of the living room.
What Does an In-Home Session Look Like?
Unlike a studio session with bright flash, an in-home session relies on natural window light. It is quiet and intimate.
- Newborns: We capture the “sleepy haze” of those first weeks. No beanbags or awkward poses—just you holding your baby in the nursery.
- Toddlers: We bake cookies, jump on the bed, or read books. When kids are in their own environment, they open up immediately.
- The Light: Even on a gray Rochester day, window light is soft and flattering. It wraps around you, creating a moody, painterly look that I love.
How to Prepare Your Home
You don’t need to deep clean the whole house. We usually stick to the rooms with the best light:
- The Master Bedroom (great for cuddling on the bed)
- The Living Room (near a large window)
- The Nursery or Playroom
All you need to do is clear the clutter off and open the curtains. I handle the rest.
Embrace the Indoors
Don’t let the weather stop you from documenting this season of your life. In-home sessions are available year-round.
