The number one question I get after booking a session is: “What should we wear?”
It is a valid worry. You are investing in professional photography, and you want to look your best. But as a Rochester family photographer with an artistic background, my advice might surprise you.
Don’t try to match. Try to coordinate.
Here is my guide to styling your family for timeless, artistic portraits that focus on connection, not clothing.
1. Texture is Everything
Because I am a ceramic artist, I am obsessed with texture. In photography, texture translates to “feeling.” It adds depth to a 2D image.
Avoid plain, shiny synthetic fabrics. Instead, choose materials that have life to them:
- Chunky knit sweaters
- Waffle thermals
- Linen dresses
- Denim or Corduroy
Pro Tip: If we are shooting at a location like Mendon Pond Park or Highland Park, natural textures look incredible against the organic backdrop.
2. The “Earth Tone” Palette
Rochester has beautiful natural scenery, from the deep greens of the Finger Lakes to the golden wheat fields in Victor. To stand out without clashing, stick to an earthy color palette.
Colors that photograph beautifully:
- Rust and Terracotta
- Mustard Yellow and Camel
- Sage and Forest Green
- Cream and Oatmeal (much better than stark White)
- Deep Navy or Charcoal (softer than pitch Black)
What to avoid: Neon colors, bright red (unless it’s a specific holiday look), and large logos or graphics on kids’ shirts. These distract the eye away from your child’s face.
3. Dress for the Rochester Weather (Layers!)
We live in Upstate New York. The weather changes every 15 minutes. The secret to a happy session—especially with kids—is layers.
If we are shooting a Fall or Winter session, cold kids are crying kids. Dress them in cute base layers, then add a wool vest, a thick cardigan, or a beautiful scarf. This not only keeps them warm but allows us to change their “look” just by taking a layer off halfway through the session.
4. Movement Matters
My sessions are play-based. I might ask you to sit on a blanket, run through a field, or spin your daughter around.
Wear clothes you can move in. Long, flowy dresses are amazing for mothers because they capture the wind and look painterly in motion. For dads, a fitted henley or button-down with sleeves rolled up looks relaxed but polished.
